Japanese (日本語) At Hockerill Anglo-European College
Japanese at Hockerill is unusual, fun, and interesting. Rajakumar Sensei (先生) teaches us Japanese enthuasiastically as a second foreign language from years 8 to 11 as a GCSE, then if we choose to stay on for IB we have the opportunity to take it to the next level

We have always liked to make our Japanese classroom look lovely. We decorate it with our work (which we try to make beautiful) and other Japanese souvenirs that are brought back from Tokyo on the Japanese exchange. We take great pride in our work and try to make it look presentable. We study 4 units in our GCSE years (unit 1, unit 2, unit 3 and unit 4).

The hirigana is the first alphabet we learn in our GCSE course. It consisits of 46 characters which all apart from ん follow the a,i,u,e,o structure (consonant followed by vowel). We use a Mnemonic system to learn them. So, for istance, Ku (く) is a kukaburra's beak. This helped us to learn these quickly and accurately. Our teacher also finds that it is important to learn the stroke order properly and ensure that we are then able to write more swiftly for our exam in year 11.

The Hiragana is the second of the three alphabets. It consisits of 48 characters of which, again, follow the a,i,u,e,o consonant followed by a vowel structure. We again, use mnemonics to learn these characters, however they
are less used for the katakana. Our teacher, Mrs Rajakumar is again very strict upon stroke order because if we can naturally use this stroke order in a test it will be far quicker than using your own stroke order and in a GCSE exam time is of the essence.
